After spending time in backing bands for performers like Feist, Sebastian Krueger has released Inter Arbiter - an album that shows off the performer’s conventional flair for layered arrangements.
The album opens with an admonishing piano introduction that, in ninety short seconds, sets the album’s overall tone. As “Canteen” begins, the listener is immediately met by acoustic guitars and vocals that spotlight a distinct closeness that reverberates throughout the entire record. In listening to tracks like “Great Exit Lights” and “Bright Orange Air,” the listener will notice that Krueger’s vibrato never stands above any one instrument; rather the vocals weave in and out of the band’s fidgety rhythms attracting our attention from one inimitable sound to another.
The overall sonic closeness of Inlet’s debut album, Inter Abrbiter, could perhaps make the first few listens a challenging adventure. As the album sets in however, the listener is sure to make peace with the dramatic loss of distance between sound and listener - a reward well worth sacrificing a little personal space for.
